You should be able to find something to your liking in the Dell, Lenovo and HP business outlets.
Refurbished business products

Lenovo Outlet | Laptop, Desktop and Tablet PCs | Lenovo | (US)
Try eBay for a deal like this one

I was just looking through Amazon's selection and ran across this Sony below, which looks intriguing.
I have no experience with Sony, kind of bad experience with Dell and currently have a Lenovo which I like.
I need to check out Lenovo's outlet, I do get employee pricing but not sure what the difference is between employee and outlet.
Sony VAIO E Series SVE1413TCXB 14-Inch Laptop $469.00
Intel Pentium E2220 2.4 GHz
4 GB DDR3 RAM
320 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
14.0-Inch Screen, Intel HD Graphics
Windows 8, 6-hour battery life

You can get something much better than the Sony for the same price. You can easily get an i3 for the same price. The Pentium is a hobbled processor. And the battery life is no where near 6 hours. You would be lucky if you get about 4 hours with normal use.
You could try for a ThinkPad E431 with the i3 processor. I don't know if you would get the discount in the outlet.

Please look for reviews. I would still recommend a business laptop.

You can also take a look at Dell's and HP's outlets for their business-class laptops in your price range. Though I'd suggest trying to find something with at least a 1600x900 (or better) if you can find one since that will be the single most important spec on a laptop for a non-gamer since it not only provides more screen real estate (correlated to higher productivity) but also overall better quality as well (better colors, contrast, etc).

I did check the HP site and couldn't find a 14 with that screen resolution and my price point. I have also had good luck with Lenovo, so have no problem going back. Thanks again
